Rain is often associated with sad moments or sad feelings. In movies, we often see actors walk in the rain during the depressing moments of the plot, when somebody dies, cries, or loses in life. This will usually be accompanied by sad and melancholic music.
In real life it would be really weird if it started raining every time something sad and depressing happened, but thanks to TV and the movies we now generally associate rain with upset, sadness and depression.
Rain may also bring a lot of troubles to people especially if they are one of those who didn’t want to get themselves wet before going to work or school. Others may not find the sound of the rain appealing to the ears.
While others don’t even want the idea of rain, here we are suggesting you to take a walk while raining. We know it might sound crazy, but we have gathered some reasons to convince you to try walking in the rain.
If you are someone who likes music, we bet you already have heard a song crooning about walking in the rain. But, what good things walking in the rain can bring you?
First reason: There are typically less people
If you are someone who likes walking but hates the crowd, walking in the rain is the best for you. Many people cover up or go to covered places once it has started to rain meaning only brave souls can continue strolling during a storm. You will be left alone with your thoughts and will be able to de-stress easier.
Second: The air is scientifically proven to be cleaner and fresher
A recent study showed that the air is truly cleaner during and after heavy rainfall. The reason is that as raindrops fall through the atmosphere, they have the ability to attract hundreds of particles of pollutants like dander, soot, sulphates and bacteria before hitting the ground. Proof that invigorating breaths of rainy air actually are better!
Third: The smell of rain has a calming effect
Have you ever heard the word “petrichor”? If not yet, let me tell it to you. It is the distinct smell of the air during rainfall. It was believed to bring a calming effect on your brain which will help you think deeper and clearer. Sounds cool, isn’t it?
Fourth: The humidity is good for your skin and health
Did you know that high levels of humidity in the air help keep your skin fresh, young and supple? Well now, you do.
Fifth: Rainy walks help with acceptance
How would walking in the rain help you in accepting something? People always want to take control of everything. We want a certain thing to happen so we do something about it. But when we take rainy day walks on a daily basis, it helps us train our mind to give up control and just go about life, no matter what the weather. And that, friends, is acceptance.
Sixth: Walks in the rain help you see things with a different perspective
The world in the rain is a different place. It’s like looking at reality through a different lens. The streets are empty and quiet, steam rises from the ground and the weather is cool. There is something about the rain that changes our association to a place.
Seventh and the best yet: Walks in rainy weather burn more calories
Believe it or not, Japanese researchers published a piece in the International Journal of Sports medicine that proved when a person does physical activity in cold, rainy weather, he/she actually burns more calories and fat than doing the same activity in moderate weather.
So there, we have mentioned the reasons why you have to try walking in the rain once in a while.
Teachers looked so happy and relieved after they took a walk in the rain. We’re guessing they have realized some of the things mentioned above. Probably they have already released their stress while walking, how lucky they are!
